I have always been told I just have a thyroid problems I recently went to a specialist who done many tests n said I have Graves' disease did any one have ellavated liver enzyme levels?

Hi Becca,

Liver is a major target of thyroid hormones. I always had problems with liver enzymes with thyroid dysfunction. Elevated alkaline phosphatase level can be seen in hyperthyroidism as liver attempts to create a more alkaline environment in the body. Other enzymes, such as AST and ALT, which are markers of liver health may be elevated during antithyroid drug therapy.

The changes in liver enzymes are a reflection of thyroid dysfunction and generally return to normal when thyroid hormone levels are optimal.
